Where to Go for Style Making Props

What makes a signature style? Is it the angle from where the photographer shoots? Is it the fact that the image has low- or high-key lighting?

Often what makes an image or series of images immediately identifiable are the props. So where do Alt community members find their props? In a recent AltChat we asked them just that. Here are some of their favorite shops for memorable, on brand, eye-catching props.

Four Things To Know About Periscope

Periscope is a live video-streaming app from Twitter. Unlike Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, or Google+, Periscope, available for both Android and Apple devices, is about original content, not curated content. It brings both immediacy and intimacy to your content – if used wisely.

Here are four things you need to know to use Periscope effectively.

Alt Chat Wednesday: Recognizing Your Inner Critic

Creatives are often their harshest critics. Why? Because often doubts, discouragement from naysayers, advice from colleagues trying to be helpful, and more swirl around in our heads. And materialize as our inner critic. But, they don’t mean we’re frauds; the presence of an inner critic means you’re in the club; you’re a creative. Let’s chat Wednesday July 15, 2015 at 9AM PDT/12PM EDT on Twitter about strategies and techniques for moving past these inner critics.

How to Find Color Inspiration All Summer Long

Summer is the perfect time to find color inspiration. With everything in nature in full bloom and illuminated by the sun, colors come to life. Sherwin-Williams Colors of the Month reflect the colors we find ourselves surrounded by in summer, from trees, to the things we eat to the spaces around us.

Love color as much as we do? Join the Alt community this Wednesday morning June 17, 2015 at 9AM PDT/12 PM EDT for an hour-long chat about color, sponsored by Sherwin-Williams. Sherwin-Williams will be giving two lucky participants a $100 gift card.

Announcing coLAB

Last week at Alt Summer 2015 during our closing keynote (it was a good one!), we announced a new project. It’s called coLAB! And it’s a collaborative project between three communities. Latina Bloggers Connect (that’s the L), Alt Summit (that’s the A) and Blogalicious, (you guessed it, that’s the B).

We’re all teaming up to cross connect our communities. As an Alt attendee, you can opt into this experimental program. If you do, you will be partnered with a member of the Blogalicious or Latina Bloggers Connect communities. Together, you and your new partner will come up with a fun, collaborative project, large or small — it’s totally up to you. Curious how you can participate? Read on!

Alt Chat: Sharing a Story That’s Uniquely You

Sites with over 100,000 page views and millions of fans have a unique point of view. And it’s that point of view that attracts and keeps their community interested and coming back for more.

But how do we follow in their footsteps? Where do we start with our story and how do we find fans that appreciate it?

Join the Alt community on Twitter Wednesday morning (tomorrow) June 3rd at 9 AM PT/12 PM ET for an hour-long chat about your greatest challenges producing and sharing your story, how we are (and aren’t) connecting with our fans, what we want them to take away from our work, and more.

Alt Chat: Creating Work You Love

Everywhere where you turn an article or a person is giving you another “should.” You should post consistently. You should promote yourself on social media. I don’t know about you, but all these shoulds are enough to paralyze me. I need to remind myself as long as I love the work I’m creating I can give myself the occasional pass when I deprioritize a should.

Join the Alt community on Twitter Wednesday morning (tomorrow) May 20th at 9 AM PT/12 PM ET for an hour-long chat about what tips you have for avoiding becoming overwhelmed, how you define success, choose which projects you’ll work on and which ones you’ll pass on, and more.

Alt Chat Wednesday: Keeping Your World View Fresh

How often do you step outside your comfort zone? Change up your daily routine? Why does this matter? Because when we’re not changing up what we’re seeing and doing our perspective and our writing can get stale.

Join the Alt community and our co-host Airbnb on Twitter Wednesday morning (tomorrow) April 29th at 9 AM PT/12 PM ET for an hour-long chat about how to use food and travel to keep your writing fresh. We will be talking about how to incorporate travel and new cuisines into your blogging, engage readers in your adventures, and more.
