Closing Keynote: Jessica Hische

Have a New York Times best selling book. Check. List Barack Obama and Wes Anderson as clients. Check. Be in Forbes 30 Under 30. Check. Travel the world. Check. Be a Keynote Speaker at Alt Summit. Check (almost).

If you know one name in the world of lettering artists, it’s most certainly Jessica Hische. While we’ve spent years admiring her from a distance, we now have the chance to hear from her on the keynote stage. That’s right, the insanely talented letterer, illustrator, author, self proclaimed crazy-cat-lady is coming to Alt! Commence the celebratory dancing.

Friday Morning

Friday morning is set-up to be the perfect time to wind down and enjoy a few more conversations.  Here’s what’s on the schedule:

Last Chance Swap Party
Hosted by Liz Stanley of Say Yes, this good old fashioned swap party is sure to be a treasure trove of finds. Bring a few items to swap, and score some fun new things from fellow attendees. Bring clothes, swag, or anything you like. This is a perfect time to really think about what you want to carry home in your suitcase. Find it at the Saguaro Palmetto Room.

Co-Working Space & Meetup Lounge
Are there a few more conversations you want to have before you leave? Come kick it at the meetup lounge and sign each others notepads — see you next year. Or, take some time to sit down with your new business partner and prep your plan of attack for the rest of 2019. Find this space at the Riviera.

Check the Meetup Section of the App
There are at least ten meetups on the schedule so far for Friday morning — including some fun tours. Some are meeting at the Riviera, others at the Saguaro. And some are meeting off-site. Find details on the app.

Hunt for Old Hollywood with Gumshoe Adventures
This is something you can do all week — you don’t have to wait until Friday — and it’s an especially fun thing to do before you head out of town. It’s a self guided tour with a twist! Using your powers of deduction (and probably Google), figure out the answers to the carefully crafted clues. Once you’ve done that, follow the link to the addresses and homes of some of the most well-loved stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Such a fun way to get to know Palm Springs. Find details on the app.

Closing Concert

Fun fact, The Riviera Hotel is famed for the legendary performances that have taken place there. So we knew we just had to throw a BIG closing night party — a concert featuring performances by Alt Summit community members. Plan to round out the week with a fabulous evening of tunes! The lineup includes:

Brooke White is an American indie pop/folk singer-songwriter and actress, who is also a long-time Alt Summit Alum, and half of the dynamic duo, The Girls With Glasses. You might also recognize Brooke from American Idol — she was a finalist on Season 7.

Billy Raffoul is an Interscope Records’ singer, songwriter, and musician. His signature sound is a rough-hewn, low-timbered rock and roll that nods to the likes of Jeff Buckley, Neil Young, and Joe Cocker.

Kelly Donnelly of A Girl Called She is a Los Angeles-based artist and activist. Donnelly exudes empowerment and her positivity is infectious. You only have to speak to her for five minutes to know that she is so fired up to speak to women around the globe and create a movement that promotes sisterhood.

Lacey Williams is a Nashville country singer/songwriter, and creator of The Maybelle Series. The Maybelle Series features local female singer-songwriters in Nashville-style songwriter rounds.

Leeann and Michelle are comediennes who’ve created viral hits like, “Look What Joanna Made Me Do,” “If You’re My Friend Then You’d Buy This,” and “The Diet.” They’ll be our MCs for the evening.

If this is your first year at Alt, you might not be familiar with our beloved Roundtable sessions. Here’s the rundown: The ballroom at the Riviera will be filled with tables roundtables. At each table, a presenter will be ready to share their expert advice on a specific topic. (You’ll spot the topic and presenter because there will be a sign on the table.)

It’s an excellent time to get specific questions answered and to connect with others who can help. Feel free to move from table to table or stay at one table the entire time and really delve into the topic.

There are three roundtable sessions on Tuesday — each session will feature 35 new topics. And if you can’t get to all the topics you want to on Tuesday, you’re in luck! The roundtables repeat  on Thursday. You can find the full descriptions of each roundtable topic under the schedule section on the App — there are sure to be several that spark your interest.

Not into the idea of roundtables? We got you. There will be lots of other classes available during the roundtable sessions at the Parker, Saguaro, and Ace.

Author Signings & Marketplace

Clear some space on your bookshelf — we have so many talented authors attending this year, Just Fabulous Boutique is setting up shop. Just Fabulous is a local Palm Springs favorite and we’re delighted they’ll be joining us.  Come browse the selection of books and gifts in the Riviera Salon. Their pop-up will be open Monday through Thursday. Find hours and details on the app.

Extra fun: In the same salon as the pop-up gift/book shop, you’ll find 35+ Book Signings taking place throughout the week. Be sure to check the app schedule to find out when you can drop by to meet a favorite author.

If you’d like to do some more shopping (those souvenirs aren’t going to buy themselves), another new feature this year is our Pop-up Marketplace. You’ll find vendors conveniently placed right outside the Riviera Ballroom on Monday and Tuesday. Expect to see curated goods from:

Esela Skin Care
Kid Made Modern
Āether Beauty
May Designs
Rad and Happy
Ashley Collett Design
Spruce Up

Just don’t forget to leave extra room in your suitcase.

We Love Garance

We’re pleased as punch (do you think that expression works in French?) that the always lovely Garance Doré will be our featured keynote speaker on Wednesday. Garance first hooked us over ten years ago with her signature fashion illustrations and we’ve been faithful followers of all her work since. Her site Atelier Dore is a favorite daily read, her NY Times best selling book, Love, Style, Life , is a staple on the coffee table, and her webseries is delightful. If you’re not a member of her fan club yet, you will be after hearing from her.

Food & Shuttles

Update and refresh your Alt Summit app (passcode is ALT if you’re logging on for the first time). Why? Because there’s a new section on the app that we think you’ll be pretty excited about: FOOD! Click the food icon to see what’s available when and where. This includes where you’ll be able to find caffeine, where you can grab a handful of snacks for your purse, and what’s happening for lunch.

Speaking of lunch, when you check-in, you’ll receive 3 tickets for Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday with an assigned venue. You’re welcome to trade with another attendee if another option works better for you. Lunch on Tuesday is happening at the Novogratz Keynote.

Shuttle Time

Don’t have a Vespa to scooter you to each venue? Alt Summit shuttles will be making a loop among all four venues during the conference. Wait times will be limited, snacks on board, good times to be had.

Shuttle hours are:
Sunday 1pm-6pm
Monday through Thursday 8am-6pm

Runway Shows & Live Artist

If there was a theme for this year’s conference, it would be NEW. Along those lines, here’s something new this year: We’re bringing a runway to Alt Summit! At the top of each hour on Wednesday, a featured designer will be sending their gorgeous looks down the runway in the Parker Ballroom.

Heads up — you might recognize some of your fellow attendees playing model! Look forward to seeing designs from: Amanda PernaMicah Clasper-TorchLucien + OleanderDanielle Wilson, and Pepper Place Design. Fun, fun!

And one more thing happening at the Parker Ballroom: Here’s your chance to meet artist Adri Reynoso, who will be illustrating portraits of attendees right on the spot. We can’t think of a better souvenir. You can find Adri on Monday and Wednesday afternoon.

Solo Talks

Something else happening at the Parker that we’re jumping up and down about? Solo speakers covering really compelling topics. You may have noticed this on the schedule. On Monday, Tuesday and Thursday,  the Parker Ballroom will be dedicated to solo TED-style talks. Meaning, they’ll be compact — typically 15 to 20 minutes — and impactful.

And we’ve grouped several solo-speakers together in sessions with over-arching topics:
Design, Style & Color; Empowered Women in Business; Balance & Clarity; Pitching, Raising Money & Entrepreneurship; Let’s Get You Inspired; Business Development; Doing The Right Thing; Honing Your Business Skills; How-To Topics; and Social Media.

You’ll be able to hear from people like Andrea Williams from Tubby Todd on how to build a business you can sell. Elsie Larson and Emma Chapman will share their tips on starting a successful app. Trying to beat imposter syndrome? Jennifer Bridgeforth will teach you how to tackle it. These women, plus dozens of others (and two men), will take the stage for talks good enough to go viral.

Gifting Party & Dance Party

Ready to make plans for Monday Night of the conference? Here’s all the info you need.

New this year: We’re hosting a Monday night Gifting Party. What’s a Gifting Party? It’s an opportunity for you to bring your welcome tote and handpick what goes into it — so you only head home with items you will use and love.

The carefully chosen vendors will be set up at the Saguaro Hotel, where you’ll get to “shop” their goods and select a few to take home with you — all complimentary. And we’re not talking branded drink cozies. Coveted items will be available from amazing brands like these:

Emily Bordner
Workman Publishing
Juju Be Gone
Kitty Meow
Tubby Todd
Annie Sloan
Nomad Artisan Company
Oh Happy Day
Darn Good Yarn
Jana Makes Cookies
Cotton & Clay Co.

Excited yet? It’s going to be better than a solo trip to Target.

Have other plans that night, but want free gifts? We’ve got you covered. On Tuesday, we’ll bring the extra gifts to the Alt Summit check-in desk at the Riviera Ballroom for those who missed the Gifting Party.

Also on Monday night, after you’ve filled your gift bags, get your cardio in by busting a move in the room right across the hall. We’ll have the dance floor lit up, the disco ball spinning, and the Drag Queen of Palm Springs, Rusty Waters, will be your DJ and Host.

So tease out your hair and don’t forget the gold lamé, we want to see your moves! Need outfit inspiration? Head to Pinterest.
